Life can be busy and unpredictable. That means that all kinds of cuts, scrapes and lacerations  can happen to you or your loved ones. Knowing basic first aid for wounds for the initial care of  minor injuries such as cuts, scrapes, and even small burns that do not require immediate medical  attention is important.1-3 In contrast, emergency wound care is all about tackling serious injuries that could be life-threatening or cause lasting damage.4 Think deep cuts, heavy bleeding,  puncture wounds, deep lacerations, or wounds that reach down to the bone.4 It's about quick  actions to stop bleeding, protect the injury, and get help ASAP!

In wound care, the main aims are to heal properly and avoid infections. Here are some quick tips  for handling injuries in emergencies:4-6

  1. Assess the situation fast, including how severe the injury is.
  2. Stop bleeding with pressure, elevation, or a tourniquet if needed.
  3. Clean and remove debris from the wound to prevent infection.
  4. Cover the wound with the right dressing to help it heal.
  5. Get a tetanus shot if the wound is dirty or if you have not had one recently.
  6. Consider stitches or glue for closing wounds if they're deep.
  7. Manage pain and learn how to care for the wound afterward.
  8. Monitor the wound for signs of infection such as redness, swelling, odour and warmth at  the injured area site.
